Witness the elegance of Lipizzaner stallions in Vienna's historic arena
The world-famous Spanish Riding School is the training ground for riders and their Lipizzan horses - Europe's oldest breed of horse. It's located between Michaelerplatz and Josefsplatz inside the Hofburg, in central Vienna. The 'Spanish' in the title refers to the Spanish heritage of the horses.
This beautiful building has been an equestrian training center for more than 450 years. Guests can enter and watch these amazing horses learn the ropes and reins, in preparation for their performances in the Winter Riding School (Winterreitschule) in the Hofburg.

I enjoyed the tour of the stables quite a lot, and also the historical perspective provided before and during the hour. This seems like it added a deeper dimension to the experience of seeing the horses.
In fact, an hour and a half would’ve been much better, since the four locations in only one ...
My daughter and I loved the backstage tour of the Spanish Riding School - we are both riders and really appreciated seeing "behind the scenes" . Watch the Lipizzaner horses perform in the unique, baroque Winter Riding School
Just a little difficult finding the venue - and we met others having the same problem as the plaza is a huge complex - but once found, it was very well organized and easy to access the stadium. The performance was magnificent: a “must do” when visiting Vienna. Highly recommend!
Awesome to see these beautiful horses performing with such precision. The riders are breathtaking with their quiet connections with their mounts communicating each and every aid hardly noticeable to the naked eye.
These stallions are so accepting of all that is asked of them, true showmen.
Watch Europe’s oldest horse breed in action
Attending the training was magical. My mother took me as a child and I took my great grand niece yesterday. The riders are amazing, the horses impecably trained and beautiful. A wonderful experience all the way including the gentlemen who sat us who was informative and kind.
We not advised that we had to exchange the tickets at the box office. We almost missed the start of the performance and ended up being stuck in the corner on the upper tier. Very poor view had to stand up for the whole performance otherwise couldn’t see. Not a happy experience.
